Are you familiar with this computer industry term? Come backs occur when you computer support company can’t get it right the first time and just keep coming back to fix the problem, and of course, the cost is passed along to you.

A typical Digital Business Services customer has 2 to 30 computers, and one of the following network configurations:

Simple. File and print sharing only. No network server, just Windows-based computers connected with cable and perhaps sharing software, files and printers. These may or may not be connected to an internet modem and router so everyone in the office can share the internet. Many of these smaller networks don’t have adequate security or backup/recovery plans in place.

Intermediate. Server-based network. This means you have a computer running some version of network software, such as Windows 2000 or 2003 Server. You may have several departments accessing office applications, drawing programs, or accounting software. Some users may have desktop printers while others print to a central printer. Usually you have network cabling running back to your switch and then perhaps an internet modem and router. Most server-based networks include some type of backup device (i.e., tape or DVD backup) and router with a firewall.

Advanced. Multiple-server network. Some companies mix their “platforms.” This means they may have the accounting software on a Macintosh, Unix or Linux-based network server, while the rest of the office uses a Windows-based server for the rest of their software, file sharing and printing services.
